На удивление такой синтаксис вполне себе компилируется и выдает резуьлтат. Думаю этому можно найти применение.

Code:
DATA: BEGIN OF gt_names OCCURS 0,
        namsur TYPE char80,
      END OF gt_names.

SELECT name_first AS namsur(40)
       name_last AS namsur+40(40)
FROM   adrp
INTO   CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TABLE gt_names.
